Define the Merino Program

Merino wool is used in performance base layers for thermal regulation, moisture buffering and odor-management potential. Fiber fineness, yarn, blend ratio and knit structure strongly influence softness and durability.

State whether the product is for cold-weather running, hiking, travel or recovery. The required warmth, weight and next-to-skin comfort will differ.

Choose Fiber Fineness and Blend

Finer wool can feel softer but may require support from nylon, polyester or another fiber to improve strength and abrasion resistance. Elastane may be added when closer fit and recovery are needed.

Request the full composition, fiber specification, yarn information and fabric weight. Compare physical samples because a small change in yarn can alter touch and pilling.

Manage Moisture, Warmth and Odor

Wool can absorb moisture vapor while still feeling comfortable, but drying behavior depends on garment thickness and construction. Test the complete base layer under the intended layering system.

Avoid absolute odor-free claims. If odor performance is marketed, select appropriate evidence and define care conditions and wear duration.

Test Pilling, Abrasion and Seams

Base layers rub against packs, outer garments and skin. Evaluate pilling and abrasion at shoulders, cuffs, waist and underarm areas. Fine wool blends may need reinforcement or construction changes in high-friction zones.

Use low-profile seams and soft labels for next-to-skin products. Inspect seam extension because the fabric must move without broken stitches or bulky ridges.

Control Shrinkage and Care

Wool blends can shrink or felt when exposed to inappropriate heat and agitation. Approve the wash route, dimensional change and appearance after the planned care cycles.

Clarify certification, animal-welfare or traceability claims before ordering if they are part of the brand story. Keep documents linked to the exact fiber and production batch.
