Separate Stretch Woven From Stretch Knit
A four-way stretch woven uses woven construction with mechanical stretch, elastane or both. It can provide a lighter, crisper and less body-hugging feel than common legging knits, making it useful for gym, running and hybrid training shorts.
The label four-way stretch does not define force or recovery. Record fiber content, weave, GSM, usable width, finish and measured extension in both directions before pattern approval.
Balance Mobility With Garment Stability
Training shorts need enough extension for squats and lunges without becoming unstable at the waist, pocket opening or hem. Excessive stretch can allow loaded pockets to bounce and may make a loose short feel larger during movement.
Fit the fabric on the actual pattern and test the full movement range. Review rise, crotch shape, side slit and waistband construction together instead of using stretch to compensate for a restrictive pattern.
Choose Weight and Surface for the Activity
Very light fabric can feel cool but may cling when wet, show pocket bags or lack durability around equipment. A heavier woven can improve coverage while reducing packability and drying speed.
Inspect matte versus shiny surfaces, noise during movement and skin contact. Brushed or peached finishes change handfeel but may also affect abrasion and drying.
Engineer Pockets and Seams
Phone pockets, zipper pockets and bonded hems add localized weight. Reinforce openings without creating a rigid patch that fights the surrounding stretch. Test the intended phone or key load during running and jumping.
Select seams that extend with the fabric and check needle damage. Fine stretch wovens can show puckering when thread tension, stitch density or feeding is unsuitable.
Approve the Production Fabric
Test dimensional change, recovery, abrasion, pilling, snagging, colorfastness and any water-repellent finish after the intended wash cycles. Compare the result with an unwashed control.
For quotation, send the activity, inseam, liner requirement, target GSM, pocket load, stretch expectation, colors and quantity. This lets the supplier match fabric availability to the construction.
