Four-Way Stretch Is a Direction, Not a Quality Grade
Four-way stretch usually means the fabric extends in both length and width directions. It does not state how far the material stretches, how much force is required or how completely it returns. Two fabrics can both carry the label while creating very different compression and fit.
Record the knit construction, composition, GSM and test direction together with elongation and recovery. Mark the roll direction so pattern pieces are cut consistently.
Separate Elongation From Recovery
Elongation describes how far a specimen extends under a defined condition. Recovery describes how well it returns after the load or extension is removed. Fabric growth is the residual extension left behind and can appear in garments as bagging at knees, seat or elbows.
ASTM D2594/D2594M addresses stretch and growth in low-power knitted fabrics, while support fabrics may require another applicable method. Ask the laboratory or material specialist to confirm the method for the intended garment.
Translate Fabric Data Into Pattern Tension
A close-fitting legging or compression short is normally developed with negative ease, but the correct amount depends on fabric force and recovery. Copying the same pattern onto a softer or firmer fabric can create sliding, restriction, transparency or distorted seams.
Fit the actual production fabric on the target body and review it through squats, lunges, bends and repeated movement. Measure waistband movement and garment growth after the session.
Test Color and Construction Variables
Dyeing and finishing can change stretch behavior. Compare launch colors when the garment relies on high extension or opacity. Printed areas, bonded panels, lining and logo applications may reduce local stretch even when the base fabric passes.
Check stretch around seams and openings, not only on a loose swatch. Thread, stitch type, seam allowance and panel direction must accommodate the approved movement.
Lock the Bulk Standard
Keep an approved fabric swatch and garment sample with the test condition, extension result, recovery interval and permitted variation. Include a relaxation period before cutting if the material requires it.
For sourcing, provide the activity, desired compression, body-size range, opacity requirement, fabric weight and care route. This creates a usable four-way-stretch specification instead of a marketing description.
