Pilling and Abrasion Are Different Failures

Pilling describes fiber balls and related surface change, while abrasion testing evaluates resistance to rubbing wear under a defined method. A fabric can resist wear yet develop visible pills, or remain visually clean while thinning in a high-contact area.

Define the retail concern before ordering a test. Yoga leggings, cycling shorts, gym tops and brushed lounge sets experience different friction and customer expectations.

Select a Method That Matches the Material

ASTM lists D4966 for Martindale abrasion and D4970 for pilling and related surface changes using a Martindale tester. Other pilling methods also exist. The laboratory should confirm which method, pressure, cycles and evaluation scale fit the fabric and market.

Do not compare ratings produced by different methods as if they were the same result. Keep the method and specimen preparation beside every acceptance number.

Map Real Garment Contact Zones

Inner thighs, underarms, seat, waistbands and areas under bags or equipment can experience concentrated friction. Identify these zones on the pattern and review seam or print placement that may increase rubbing.

Garment wear trials complement laboratory results. Use the correct size and activity, then photograph the same zones before and after a controlled session or care cycle.

Include Finishes and Laundering

Brushing, peaching and softening can change surface fiber exposure. Test the final finished fabric, not only the greige or unfinished quality. Recheck after laundering when the surface is expected to change during care.

Dark colors, melanges and prints may make surface change more visible. Review representative launch colors and do not approve the whole collection from one convenient swatch.

Set an Approval Standard

Record the method, cycle count, load, conditioning, rating scale, acceptance level and visual reference. Keep the approved report and swatch with the fabric specification and bulk inspection plan.

For a buyer inquiry, identify the garment, activity, contact risks, surface finish, expected care and price level. This allows fabric durability to be balanced with softness, stretch and cost.
