Compression Activewear Fabric: Modulus, Recovery and Support

Specify compression activewear fabric through force, elongation, recovery, growth, fit tension and movement testing instead of relying on spandex percentage.

Compression Is More Than Spandex Content

Fiber percentage does not tell a buyer how firm a fabric feels at a given extension. Yarn type, knit construction, GSM, finishing and direction all affect the force applied to the body.

Define the intended support level and product use. A recovery legging, training short and performance base layer should not inherit the same fabric simply because their composition labels match.

Measure Force at Relevant Extension

Elongation shows how far a material can extend, while modulus or force at a stated extension helps describe how strongly it resists. Recovery and growth show whether the support remains after repeated movement.

Ask the material supplier or laboratory to choose an applicable method for the fabric and end use. Record direction, specimen width, extension, cycles, relaxation and result units so comparisons remain valid.

Balance Pattern Reduction and Comfort

Compression is created by the interaction of fabric and pattern. Excessive negative ease can restrict breathing, movement or circulation, while insufficient tension allows sliding and bagging.

Fit the correct fabric on the target size range. Review waist, thigh, calf, armhole and seam pressure during the intended activity, not only during a standing fitting.

Protect Opacity and Seam Performance

High extension can reduce coverage and expose seam holes. Test light and dark colors at realistic garment strain. Check thread extension, stitch type, gussets and panel direction with the approved pattern.

Pockets, prints and bonded details may create stiff zones beside highly elastic fabric. Load pockets and stretch logo areas during the wear trial.

Create a Repeat-Order Control

Retain the approved fabric swatch, test data and fitted sample. Record weight, width, force or modulus points, elongation, recovery, growth, color and care behavior for incoming-lot comparison.

Send the manufacturer the activity, support level, body-size range, coverage requirement, target fit and order quantity. This allows fabric and pattern development to proceed as one system.
