Define Water Use and Fit

Rash guards may be designed for surfing, swimming, paddle sports or resort use. State whether the fit is compression, close or relaxed and whether the garment will be worn alone or over swimwear.

Record chest, waist, body length, sleeve length, bicep and opening measurements. A wet garment behaves differently from a dry sample, so fit approval should consider the intended water activity.

Choose Sleeve and Neck Construction

Short, long and raglan sleeves create different coverage and mobility. Review underarm comfort and reach through paddling or swimming movements. Specify neckline width, depth and binding construction to control stretch and shape.

Hem length should remain stable during movement. If the design uses a board-short connector, gripper or shaped hem, include the component and attachment method in the sample brief.

Select Fabric for Swim Conditions

Confirm composition, weight, four-way stretch, recovery, opacity and colorfastness. Discuss the intended exposure to chlorinated or salt water and the care instructions supported by the selected material.

Light colors, large prints and stretched panels require additional opacity review. Lining is not always appropriate for a rash guard, so coverage should be solved through material and fit choices.

Control Seams Prints and Branding

Flat seams can reduce bulk, but the exact construction must be agreed with the fabric and design. Check seam stretch at the shoulder, armhole, side and underarm during movement.

Sublimation, screen print and transfer methods create different design possibilities and minimums. Approve artwork scale, placement, color and stretch on a complete sample, not only on a digital mockup.

Test and Document the Product

Review fit when dry and after water exposure, then check recovery, color transfer, seam comfort and dimensional change after care. Keep the approved garment, artwork and fabric reference together for bulk comparison.
