Activewear Wash Testing: Shrinkage, Spirality and Appearance Retention

Build an activewear wash-test plan for dimensional change, spirality, surface appearance, stretch recovery, color and component durability.

Test the Care Route Customers Will Use

Wash results depend on temperature, cycle, detergent, load, drying method and number of cycles. Define the intended care instruction first and use a consistent laboratory or controlled in-house procedure for comparisons.

Test the finished garment as well as the fabric when seams, elastic, pads, bonding, prints or labels may respond differently. Record the specimen condition before washing.

Measure Dimensional Change

Mark and measure fabric or garment points before care, condition the item after washing, then measure the same locations. Length and width can change at different rates, so one overall shrinkage number is not sufficient.

For fitted activewear, small changes at the waistband, rise, inseam or underband may alter comfort. Compare measurements with permitted garment tolerances after the agreed cycles.

Evaluate Spirality and Garment Torque

Spirality appears when knitted structures rotate and seams shift after laundering. It can make a side seam move toward the front or twist a leg opening. Fabric construction, relaxation, cutting and sewing can contribute.

Photograph seam alignment before and after care and measure displacement using the selected method. Do not hide the issue by folding the garment differently for inspection.

Review Appearance and Performance

Check pilling, fuzzing, creasing, color change, staining, print cracking, logo lifting, elastic waviness and bonded-edge separation. Reassess stretch and recovery if heat or repeated washing may affect elastane.

Evaluate light and dark launch colors when dye or surface behavior differs. Keep an unwashed control beside the tested item under consistent light.

Convert Results Into Bulk Controls

Record the care program, cycles, initial measurements, final measurements, calculation, photos and acceptance decision. Link the report to the exact fabric, color and sample version.

If a result fails, identify whether the correction belongs to fabric finishing, pattern allowance, seam construction, component selection or care instruction before repeating the test.
