How the Activewear Sampling Process Works

Prepare a Complete Development Brief

Sampling begins before the factory cuts fabric. The buyer should provide a tech pack, sketch, reference garment or clear image set with measurements, materials, colors and construction notes. State the intended use, size range, quantity and target market so the supplier can identify missing information.

If the project begins with an inspiration image, separate the visual idea from the technical specification. Decide which details must be copied, which should be changed and which the supplier may recommend.

Confirm Materials and Components

The first sample may use available material when the final fabric is not ready, but the difference must be recorded. Confirm when the correct fabric, color, elastic, zipper, cup, lining, drawcord or other component will be used. A fit approved in substitute material may change when the final quality has different stretch or thickness.

Approve logo methods and labels at the appropriate stage. A placement sample or strike-off can resolve branding questions before the full garment is produced.

Evaluate the First Sample

Measure the garment against the specification before fitting it. Then test appearance, comfort and movement on the intended wearer or fit model. Photograph front, back and side views, and record each issue with a measurement or construction reference.

Avoid comments such as 'make it better' or 'fit is wrong.' State what should change and by how much. Mark neckline, armhole, rise, waistband, length and pocket issues separately so the pattern maker can act on them.

Control Revisions

Use one consolidated comment file for every round. Number the sample version and date the feedback. When a change affects another measurement or seam, ask the supplier to explain the consequence before producing the next version.

A revised sample should be checked against both the latest comments and the complete specification. Fixing one issue does not automatically preserve every previously approved detail.

Approve Before Bulk Production

The approved sample, measurements, material references, color, artwork and packaging instructions should form the production standard. If a pre-production sample is required, confirm that it uses bulk materials and final branding. Keep signed or clearly documented approval records.
