Tennis Skort Ball Pockets: Direction Depth and Court Testing

Define the Pocket Job

A tennis skort pocket may store a spare ball, phone, key or card, but one opening rarely serves every purpose equally. State the priority item, preferred hand and whether the pocket must work for right- and left-handed players.

Ball storage needs quick access without bounce or pressure. Phone storage needs greater depth and opening security, so the two functions may require separate pockets.

Choose Opening Direction and Position

An upside-down inner-short pocket can hold a ball against the thigh while allowing fast retrieval. A top-entry pocket is more familiar for a phone but may be slower during play. Map the opening direction clearly on the tech pack.

Confirm distance from the hem, side seam and gusset. Poor placement can interfere with lateral movement or create a visible lump under the skirt shell.

Engineer Depth and Tension

Measure usable pocket width and depth, not only the cut panel. Seam allowances and stretch reduce the finished space. The pocket opening needs enough recovery to retain the item without digging into the leg.

The inner-short fabric should support both the body and the stored ball. If it is too soft the pocket may swing; if it is too compressive it can restrict movement.

Run a Court Test

Test serves, split steps, lateral runs, lunges and repeated ball insertion. Record whether the ball shifts, falls out, presses uncomfortably or distorts the skirt. Check both dominant hands when the design claims universal access.

Repeat the test after washing and across the size range. Pocket proportions and leg tension can change significantly between the base size and graded sizes.

Approve a Production Reference

Add the ball diameter or phone dimensions used for approval to the specification. Lock the opening, depth, position, fabric and seam type, then retain the tested garment as the bulk reference.
