Choose a Focused Product Range
A new men's performance line does not need every possible garment. Start with products that share a customer and use case. A training T-shirt, performance short and lightweight layer can create a coherent range without spreading development across too many fabrics and fits.
Define whether the collection targets strength training, running, general fitness, travel or athleisure. This decision affects silhouette, material weight, ventilation and pocket needs.
Develop Fit for the Target Customer
State whether each product should be compression, fitted, athletic or relaxed. Provide garment measurements for chest, waist, length, shoulder, sleeve, rise and inseam as appropriate. Use a reference garment when it accurately represents the desired fit, but still record its measurements and any requested changes.
Review the full size range during grading. A strong sample in one size does not guarantee balanced proportions in every size. Pay particular attention to sleeve opening, shoulder width, rise, thigh and garment length.
Match Materials to Each Garment
Lightweight training tops may prioritize drying and breathability. Compression layers need controlled stretch and recovery. Shorts may require stretch woven fabric, a knit option or a combination with mesh, lining and elastic. Select the material for the product rather than forcing one fabric across the entire range.
Confirm weight, composition, handfeel, colorfastness, shrinkage and pilling expectations. For dark colors, review rubbing fastness and potential color transfer.
Specify Functional Details
Pockets, drawcords, zippers and ventilation panels should be described in the tech pack. State pocket dimensions and intended contents. Confirm whether a phone should remain stable during movement and whether zipper teeth or pulls could contact the body.
Logo placement should suit the garment's stretch and wear points. Test transfers or prints on the approved material and review the complete outfit to keep branding consistent.
Prepare for Repeat Orders
Record the approved fit, fabric, trims, colors, artwork and packaging so the range can be reproduced. Ask how materials will be identified and whether stock or dye-lot changes may affect future orders. A repeatable core line is easier to manage than a product that depends on undocumented sample decisions.
