OEM ODM and Private Label Activewear Explained

Compare OEM, ODM and private label activewear routes by design ownership, development work, customization, MOQ, cost and launch speed.

Primary topic: OEM vs ODM vs private label activewearBy CCLIYA

Why the Terms Cause Confusion

Factories and buyers sometimes use OEM, ODM and private label differently. Before comparing quotations, describe the actual work required instead of relying on one label. State whether the buyer provides a complete design, needs development support or wants to brand an existing style.

The practical questions are who develops the product, which elements can change, who controls the specification and what quantity is required.

OEM Activewear

In a typical OEM project, the buyer provides the design direction and product requirements, often through a tech pack, physical sample or detailed specification. The manufacturer develops samples and produces the garment according to the approved standard.

OEM is appropriate when the brand needs control over fit, fabric, construction, trims and appearance. The buyer should maintain clear ownership records for its artwork and original specifications.

ODM Activewear

An ODM route includes more design or development input from the supplier. A buyer may begin with a moodboard, customer profile or incomplete concept, while the supplier proposes silhouettes, materials or construction directions.

Clarify which designs are exclusive, which are adaptations of existing developments and what may be offered to other buyers. Development fees, ownership and future reorder rights should be agreed in writing.

Private Label Programs

Private label commonly describes products sold under the buyer's brand. The underlying garment may be fully custom, adapted from an existing style or selected from ready stock. Therefore, private label alone does not explain the amount of product development involved.

Ready-stock private label programs can support faster market tests and lower quantities, while a custom private label program offers greater product control. Confirm fabric, color, fit, logo, labels and packaging individually.

Select the Right Route

Choose according to the brand's design capability, budget, quantity, launch date and need for differentiation. Ask the manufacturer to describe the exact deliverables, approvals and ownership terms rather than simply marking a quotation OEM or ODM.
