Define the Sustainability Requirement
A request for eco-friendly fabric is too broad for reliable sourcing. State whether the priority is recycled fiber content, reduced packaging, fluorine-free finishing, lower material weight, traceability or another measurable requirement. Different goals lead to different materials and documentation.
Keep environmental goals separate from performance requirements, then evaluate both. A recycled option still needs suitable stretch, recovery, opacity, durability and handfeel for the intended garment.
Verify the Material Claim
Ask what portion of the fabric is recycled and which component the claim applies to. A nylon-spandex or polyester-spandex blend may include recycled content in one fiber while the other remains conventional. Record the exact composition used for labels and marketing.
Request current documentation connected to the relevant supplier, material and transaction scope when certification is required. A general certificate from an unrelated fabric should not be used to support a product claim.
Review Performance and Processing
Test the selected fabric for the same product requirements applied to conventional material. Consider recovery, pilling, colorfastness, dimensional change and wash durability. Evaluate finishes separately because recycled fiber content does not describe every chemical or process used on the fabric.
Color, minimum quantity and availability may differ from standard stock programs. Confirm whether custom dyeing, lab dips or special lead times apply before committing to a launch date.
Reduce Packaging With Practical Specifications
Packaging changes can complement material choices. Review bag size, recycled content, unnecessary inserts, hangtags and carton efficiency while keeping adequate protection for transport and retail handling.
Avoid replacing one material with another solely for appearance without checking local disposal systems and product protection. Record the packaging specification and supplier claim just as carefully as the garment material.
Communicate Claims Accurately
Use wording that matches the evidence. State the verified recycled content and scope instead of making broad claims about the entire product or its environmental impact. Keep certificates and test reports available for internal review and buyer questions.
